Kyiv Council to hold special session in early August, says Popov

Kyiv, July 30 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Head of Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Popov has said that a special session of the city council will be held in early August.

"I am sure that the session will take place, and I know the mood of the members of the council - they are ready to convene. It is up to them to decide when [the session will be held]," he told reporters on Tuesday when inspecting the progress of the reconstruction of Poshtova Square in Kyiv.

He noted that the government had allocated additional funds, including some for the reconstruction of Poshtova Square, but that the city would be able to use the funds only after the relevant amendments are made to the city's budget.

"This should be done within the first ten days of August - and we'll do it, I am sure," Popov said.

On July 11, representatives of Ukrainian opposition parties staged a rally outside Kyiv City Council, which was to hold a plenary meeting. The opposition considered it illegitimate as the council's term expired on June 2.

Secretary of the City Council Halyna Hereha said that the city council would continue its work despite the opposition's claims about its illegitimacy.
