The participants of a rally protesting against political repression in Ukraine have announced a resolution to the European Parliament with a request that it facilitate the receipt of Ukraine's associate membership of the European Union, as well as to impose personal sanctions against representatives of the judiciary and members of the Ukrainian government.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that a respective resolution was supported by all participants in the rally organized by the opposition on Independence Square in Kyiv on Monday after a march of protest "Residents of Kyiv against Political Repression." The resolution was read out by the head of the Kyiv city branch of the Batkivschyna Party, Yuriy Odarchenko, at a rally on Monday.

"We're asking the president of the European Commission at the EU-Ukraine summit in Brussels, Jose Manuel Barroso, and representatives of the countries participating in the summit to support Ukraine's desire to obtain associate membership of the EU, support the reforms needed to continue Ukraine's course for European integration, and continue a monitoring of the fulfillment by Ukraine of the recommendations of the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, the Venice Commission and the OSCE monitoring commission," reads the resolution.

In addition, the document calls on Ukraine to assess the actions of the Ukrainian authorities with respect to former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko, "the conclusions of which will be used by the authorities as the subject of trade with the European Union," and direct efforts to release Tymoshenko and Lutsenko.

The resolution also proposes imposing personal sanctions against "Ukrainian government members, representatives of the judiciary and law enforcement agencies who made the decision to falsify court decisions, and [approved] the trials of political prisoners - the abuse and torture being faced by opposition members."

The rally ended after speeches by the leaders of opposition parties and the adoption of the resolution, and its participants peacefully left the square.
