Verkhovna Rada appoints Sorkin as NBU governor

The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has appointed Ihor Sorkin as governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

Sorkin had been working as acting head of the central bank since late December 2012.

Some 231 MPs supported the appointment at a sitting of the parliament on Friday.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych nominated Sorkin for the post.

In December 2012, the Ukrainian president appointed NBU Governor Serhiy Arbuzov to the post of first deputy prime minister and Head of the NBU Council Ihor Prasolov as the minister of economic development and trade.

The NBU governor is appointed and dismissed by parliament on the proposal of the Ukrainian president. The NBU head is appointed for a seven-year term.

On Friday, January 11, the Verkhovna Rada dismissed Arbuzov as the central bank's governor.

Sorkin had worked as deputy head of the NBU since July 15, 2010. He was in charge of banking supervision. Before that, he headed the banking supervision department at the NBU's branch in Donetsk region.

According to the Web site of Russian OJSC Gazprom, Sorkin's father, Viacheslav Sorkin, works as first deputy head of Gazprom's investment and construction department. Sorkin's father has been working for the giant gas company since 2002.
