Working group to consider amendments to language law on October 12

The working group chaired by Ukrainian Vice Premier and Health Minister Raisa Bohatyriova will hold a meeting on October 12 to consider amendments to the law of Ukraine on the principles if the state language policy.

"A professional team headed by Leonid Kravchuk" drew up the amendments to the law, the vice premier's press service said.

As soon as the working group considers the amendments and approves them, the document will be sent to the Justice Ministry of Ukraine and other central executive agencies determined by the government.

In addition, the working group is planning to consider a draft concept of the State Program for Support of the Ukrainian Language, particularly the draft program with financial calculations, as well as a list of priority measures due to be implemented this year. A group of experts chaired by Rector of the Taras Shevchenko National University Leonid Hubersky developed the package of relevant documents.

"It is expected that the working group will approve the abovementioned draft documents and pass them according to the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for taking further decisions," reads the statement.

As reported, the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, passed the language bill initiated by the Regions Party on July 3, 2012. On August 8, 2012 Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych signed the bill into law.

According to it, a language may be provided with the status of a regional language if the number of people considering it their native language exceeds 10% of the total population of the region.

Vice Premier and Health Minister of Ukraine Raisa Bohatyriova headed the working group to revise the language law. The group includes 42 members, who are divided into two subgroups chaired by First President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk and Rector of the Taras Shevchenko National University Leonid Hubersky.
