Interior minister: Killer of security guards from Karavan shopping mall a native of Lviv region who worked at private security firms

The killer of three security guards from the Karavan shopping mall in Kyiv is Yaroslav Mazurok, a native of Lviv region, born in 1974, who previously worked at private security firms, Ukrainian Interior Minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko has said.

"Thanks to efforts and reports we've received from the public, we have identified the person who committed this crime. This is Yaroslav Feodosiyovych Mazurok, born in 1974, a native of Lviv region, who has for a long time lived in Kyiv. This man worked at private security firms, indulged in sports, and has the title of a candidate for master of sports in boxing," he told Channel 5 on Friday.

Zakharchenko said that all measures were being taken to arrest the suspect.

He said that the question of paying funds to citizens who helped identify the killer was currently being resolved.

"In future, we would ask people to call and turn to the law enforcement agencies and inform them about the location of [certain] citizens," Zakharchenko said.

He said that assumptions that the killer had worked at law enforcement and other security agencies had not been confirmed.

As reported, a robber shot dead three employees of a private security firm and seriously wounded another one in the Karavan shopping mall on Luhova Street in Kyiv on September 26. One of the security guards saw a visitor stealing a USB flash drive from a glass case. The guard asked the man to go to the back room, where other guards were waiting. In the room the man pulled out a gun and started shooting, killing three security guards on the spot and seriously wounding a fourth. The attacker then fled the scene.

The Obolon District Police Office opened a criminal case on the incident. The suspect was put on wanted lists in Russia and Belarus.

Executive Director of Karavan Serhiy Kyslenko promised UAH 100,000 for assistance in finding the criminal.
