Kuchma convinced Ukraine to face second electoral revolution after war

It is currently impossible to predict the outcome of the post-war elections in Ukraine, but the chances of the current head of state, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to be re-elected as head of state are high, the second president of Ukraine (1994-2005) Leonid Kuchma is convinced.

"Regardless of when the elections take place, it is absolutely impossible to predict their outcome today. Post-war elections are generally unpredictable. The fatigue and trauma of society make forecasting the election results a thankless task. Let me remind you: in 1945, Churchill, the savior of Britain at the beginning of the war, and then the triumphant and conqueror of Hitler, lost the parliamentary elections without a chance. There are many examples in history to the contrary," Kuchma said in an exclusive interview with the Interfax-Ukraine agency.

According to him, while Zelenskyy's chances of being re-elected as president can be assessed optimistically, the likelihood of the overwhelming majority of deputies retaining their seats is pessimistic.

"I can predict one thing: we are already facing a second electoral revolution. The first took place in 2019, when Zelenskyy's team simply swept most of the political figures off the board," Kuchma said.

He also pointed out that "elections in 2025 are absolutely necessary if the war ends, and elections are absolutely impossible if the war does not end."

"In this case, they are impossible neither technically nor, what is much more important, morally. It is impossible to ensure fairness and the expression of the will of the people in elections during wartime. You will not deliver a ballot box to every trench. And without the votes of those sitting in this trench, these will not be elections, but blasphemy," Kuchma emphasized.
