Issue of opening first Ukrainian-Hungarian bilingual school in Budapest being worked out – Embassy

The issue of opening the first official Ukrainian-Hungarian bilingual school in Budapest (Hungary) is being worked out, the Embassy of Ukraine in Hungary reports.
"The issue of opening the first official Ukrainian-Hungarian bilingual school in Budapest is being worked out. Disclosure of details is premature. The official launch will be announced through official channels," the Embassy said in response to a request from the Interfax-Ukraine agency, commenting on the question when and in which city it is planned to open the first school in Hungary with the Ukrainian language of instruction.
It is also noted that today the Ukrainian language as a foreign language in Hungary is studied at the school named after Lesya Ukrainka, which began its work on September 1, 2023.
"This additional (Saturday) national school with the Ukrainian language of instruction was established by the State Self-Government of Ukrainians in Hungary. This form of education allows representatives of the Ukrainian minority to study the Ukrainian language," the response says.
In addition, when asked how many schools with the Ukrainian language of instruction should be opened in Hungary in the future to meet demand, the embassy said that there are now 10,000 Ukrainian children in Budapest (17,000 in Hungary as a whole), of whom more than 5,000 study in Hungarian schools, and the rest are studying remotely.
"The need for the number of schools will vary depending on the number of children who will be able to study in each individual educational institution, which in turn will depend on the size of the school premises," the Embassy added.
As reported, on July 2, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, during a visit to Kyiv, supported the initiative of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to open the first Ukrainian school in Hungary. Orban assured that his country would support the functioning of other similar Ukrainian schools.
Later, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine stated that they did not have information on when and in which city it was planned to open the first school in Hungary with the Ukrainian language of instruction.
There are 67 schools in Ukraine where the educational process is carried out in Hungarian. There are also 28 schools with Ukrainian and Hungarian languages, and 20 schools study Hungarian as a second foreign language.
