Ministry of Energy expects export of biomethane to be unblocked; for natural gas, everything will depend on national security situation – Deputy Minister

The Ministry of Energy expects the Verkhovna Rada to soon adopt bill No. 9456, which resolves the issue of unblocking the export of biomethane.

As Deputy Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk said, lifting the ban on natural gas exports, introduced with the start of the full-scale invasion, will depend on the impact of such a decision on the national security of Ukraine.

"For our part, we are actively working to ensure that biomethane comes out of the ban. As for natural gas, we will discuss it with our partners and evaluate the situation internally, see what the risks are," Hrynchuk told reporters on the sidelines of the Results of Heating Season 2023/2024: the economy is under fire" forum organized by the Centre for Economic Recovery in Kyiv on Friday.

She said that "first of all, this is a security situation. It is necessary to weigh the economic benefits and national security risks and make an informed decision."

As reported, bill No. 9456 on customs clearance of biomethane, opening the way to its export, was adopted in the first reading on February 7 this year. Biomethane producers are calling on the Verkhovna Rada to adopt the law at the final reading in March to make it possible to export the resource, attract foreign exchange earnings and invest in new capacities.
