Less than half of internally displaced persons in Ukraine employed - survey

Only 42% of internally displaced persons in Ukraine are employed, according to a report issued by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

According to the report, as of June 2018, the economically active share of IDPs was 53%, and the economically inactive share was 47%. Some 42% of internally displaced persons were employed, 11% are actively looking for a job and ready to start working within a two-week period., 19% are retirees, 17% are doing housework or are looking after children, 6% are people with disabilities, 3% are students, and 2% are not employed, but are not looking for a job.

Some 54% of those looking for work named among the major difficulties they faced the low pay for a proposed job vacancy, 51% the absence or lack of job vacancies, 24% the lack of job vacancies that would match the level of qualification, 18% an uncomfortable working schedule, and 6% named the lack of knowledge or skills.

Some 14% of IDPs faced discrimination when applying for a job, 7% of them by IDP status or place of registration, and another 7% by age discrimination.

The average income of the IDPs polled was UAH 2,090 per month. Some 31% of respondents receive UAH 3,000-5,000 per month, 23% - UAH 1,500-3,000 per month, 19% said they receive UAH 5,000-7,000 per month, 14% - UAH 7,000-11,000 per month, 9% receive more than UAH 11,000 per month, and 4% receive less than UAH 1,500 per month.

The national monitoring system report on the situation of internally displaced persons was conducted by IOM, the UN Migration Agency, as part of a project funded by the European Union in June 2018. Some 2,406 respondents were polled through a personal interview and 4,006 by telephone interview.
