WTO decides to create panel in Ukraine's dispute with Russia on transit

The World Trade Organization (WTO) Dispute Settlement Body on March 21 decided to create a panel in the dispute under a claim of Ukraine against Russia on restrictions of transit movement from Ukraine to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan across Russia, Deputy Economic Development and Trade Minister, Trade Representative of Ukraine Natalia Mykolska has said.

"The EU states, the United States, Brazil, India, Turkey, China, Norway, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Singapore and Paraguay support us, as they understand that Russia's aggression against Ukraine is reckless disregard of all requirements and rules of international trade," she wrote on her Facebook page.

Mykolska said that the claim is important for Ukraine, as restriction of transit is manipulations of Russia aimed at causing damage to Ukraine's relations with third countries and at restricting the access of these countries to Ukrainian food.

The trade envoy recalled that On September 14, 2016, Ukraine sent a request to hold consultations with Russia at WTO concerning restrictions of transit of Ukrainian goods across Russia. The consultations were held on November 10.

On February 9, 2017, Ukrainian sent a request to create a panel in case DS 512 Russia — Measures Concerning Traffic in Transit. On February 20, Russia rejected the request.
