Inflation in Ukraine accelerates to 1.1% in Jan

Inflation in Ukraine in January 2017 was 1.1% compared to 0.9% in December 2016, the State Statistics Service of Ukraine reported on Wednesday.

According to its data, in annual terms (compared to the same month last year) inflation in January grew to 12.4% from 12.6%.

The authority reported that food and non-alcoholic drinks prices in January grew by 1.9%. Prices of vegetable grew most of all (by 14.5%). Prices of fruit, milk, sour cream, fermented dairy products, beef, cheese and butter rose by 3.9-2.2%. Prices of eggs fell by 2.3%.

Prices for alcoholic drinks and tobacco products increased by 1.2%, in particular for tobacco goods by 2.1%, alcoholic beverages by 0.7%.

Prices of clothes and shoes fell by 4.3%, in particular for clothes – by 4.4% and shoes – by 4.1%.

Transportation prices in general grew by 2.7%. It is linked to the increase in the road transport fares by 4.5%, the price of fuel and lubricants by 2.8% and cars – by 2.1%.

Cost of education services grew by 1.1%, mainly due to the increase of fees for preschool facilities by 8.8%.

As reported, the Ukrainian government anticipates that inflation in 2017 would slow to 8.1%. The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) revised its forecast downwards from 8% to 9.1%.
