Launch of Rivne NPP-Kyiv power grids solves strategic tasks, allows to avoid rolling blackouts in Kyiv, region - Poroshenko

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko is confident that the launch of a new Rivne nuclear power plant (NPP)–Kyiv substation power grid will allow to avoid rolling blackouts in Kyiv and Kyiv region.

"First of all, this increases the energy independence of our state. Secondly, this improves the energy security of our country, the third thing is that this makes the work of the entire energy complex in the country much more efficient and cost-effective," he said after the launch of the Rivne NPP-Kyiv substation power grid in Kyiv.

The president stressed that in 2014 the share of nuclear energy in Ukraine's power system exceeded 48%.

"Today, due to the measures introduced by the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry the share of nuclear power has grown to 55%. Now this process will continue and will enable us to have more competitive tariffs through increasing the share of nuclear energy, radically reduce our dependence on coal imports, and we can now afford a more balanced policy," he said.

According to Poroshenko, this is only the first step, and the next will be the improvement of power supply in Kyiv and Kyiv region.
