Presidents of Ukraine, Azerbaijan discuss intensification of highest level dialog

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko had a phone conversation with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev, during which they discussed a number of issues on the bilateral relations agenda.

"I am confident that there are good preconditions for successful enhancement of the Ukrainian-Azerbaijani relations: our states have enough potential and respective political will for this," the presidential press service quoted Poroshenko as saying on Friday.

The interlocutors paid special attention to the consolidation of efforts in addressing regional and global challenges. "Ukraine and Azerbaijan, which have faced the external aggression and threat to their national security and territorial integrity, should unite in upholding basic principles of international law," the Ukrainian president said.

Poroshenko assured Aliyev that Ukraine's position regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has not changed. Ukraine respects territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within the internationally recognized borders.

For his part, Aliyev said that Azerbaijan will continue its support of the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The two presidents confirmed their readiness to intensify political dialogue at the highest level and coordinated an algorithm of joint bilateral activities for the near future.

In particular, the parties agreed to move to earlier dates the regular session of the Ukrainian-Azerbaijani Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation and start the preparation to the negotiations at the level of the heads of state within the Council of the Presidents of Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

Aliyev also invited Poroshenko to make an official visit to Azerbaijan.
