Economic Development Ministry creates Supervisory Council on reforming state-run companies headed by Saakashvili

Odesa Governor Mikheil Saakashvili has been appointed as head of the Supervisory Council on reforming state-controlled enterprises, which will include famous international experts on investments and corporate management.

According to Saakashvili, who was speaking at a press conference in Kyiv on Friday, the members of the council include Head of Warsaw Stock Exchange Pawel Tamborski, Managing Regional Director Francis Malige, founder of Horizon Capital company Marco Ivashko, World Bank Country Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova Qimiao Fan, and President of Mondel International in Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa Taras Lukachuk.

According to Saakashvili, Ukrainian companies have great potential but bring next to no profit to Ukraine.

"Only in 2014, they gave UAH 100 billion in losses instead of gaining the same amount of money," he said, giving Ukrspyrt as an example, where every single one of the former heads of the enterprise stole $125-180 million between them.

Saakashvili also said that state-run companies are the main source of illegal income for some Ukrainian politicians.
