Ukrainian banks' loss reaches one third of charter capital in 2014

The consolidated loss of operating Ukrainian banks reached UAH 52.966 billion in 2014, while in 2013 banks saw profit of UAH 1.436 billion, reads a post on the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) website.

"Revenues of Ukrainian banks in 2014 compared to 2013 grew by 24.5%, to UAH 210.2 billion. Expenses of Ukrainian banks in 2014 grew by 57.2% compared to 2013, to UAH 263.2 billion. The banking system's loss as of January 1, 2015 totaled UAH 53 billion," reads the report.

NBU said that the consolidated banking losses in December came to UAH 30.547 billion.

The central bank said that losses in insolvent banks and in temporarily administered banks affected banking operation.

According to the report, in 2014 losses were linked to an increase in reserve funds, while key banking transactions in the system led to profit.

"Due to external hardly predictable shocks, the solvency of borrowers grew and the volume of bad credit debts rose," reads the report.

NBU said that the share of overdue debt of the total sum of credits rose by 5.8 percentage points in a year, to 13.5%. The total volume of credits issued grew by 10.4% in 2014, to UAH 1.006 trillion along with the hryvnia devaluation by 56.4%, to UAH 19/$1.

"Payment to reserves soared by 3.7 times compared to 2013, and their share of total expenses grew from 16.7% to 39.3%," reads the report.

The central bank said that total charter capital of banks narrowed by 2.7% in 2014, to UAH 180.15 billion, and their net worth fell by 23.1%, to UAH 148.023 billion.
