Dollar tops 65 rubles, euro 77 rubles as oil slides

The dollar and euro are extending their gains against the ruble as oil prices continue to slide.

The dollar was up 188 kopecks from previous trading at 65.05 rubles/$1 by 10:34 a.m. on the Moscow Exchange) and the euro was up 240 kopecks to 77.08 rubles, their highest levels since the ruble crashed on December 17.

The dollar and euro are gaining for the third day running. In that time, the dollar has risen 4.75 rubles or 7.9% and the euro has gone up 5.5 rubles or 7.7%.

Oil prices, too, have slid for three days in succession, with February contracts for Brent crude falling 3% to nearly $45 a barrel on Tuesday.
