Azarov says Ukrainian government taking measures to stabilize economy

Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said that the Ukrainian government is taking measures to stabilize the Ukrainian economy.

While speaking at the opening of the fourth International Black Sea Economic Forum at Livadia Palace on Thursday, he said that Ukraine's economy is currently being seriously affected by the global economic crisis, as well as high prices for natural gas, which is an important component for the work of the Ukrainian chemical and mining industry.

In this regard, he said that "in these circumstances, I'd say, our economy has slightly slowed."

"In 2010-2011, we had GDP growth of 10%, whereas in 2012 and a part of 2013 it will be around 0%," he said.

He also added: "First and foremost, I want to say that the political situation in Ukraine is stable, which is very important for the investment climate, and the financial and economic situation is also stable. We don't have any problems with the repayment of foreign or domestic debt. The country is actively engaged in the implementation of major projects in terms of economic modernization and the development of infrastructure projects. We have big plans in this regard."

Azarov said that in 2010-2011 and part of 2012 Ukraine showed that it could implement major infrastructure projects, in particular, four major international airports with runways of up to four kilometers, over 4,000 kilometers of roads, and modern sports facilities have been built over the last two years as part of preparations for holding the Euro 2012 European Football Championship in Ukraine.

"It was a powerful impetus to the development of our economy. Now have the same plans, and we have to hold the EuroBasket 2015 European Basketball Championship. We also plan to build a large number of infrastructure facilities," Azarov said.
