Azarov calls on MPs not to hinder economic development

Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has called on MPs not to hinder the development of the Ukrainian economy by blocking the Verkhovna Rada.

"Stop boycotting the work of parliament, dear people's deputies. Don't hinder the development of the economy. I'm also addressing those present here, in this hall," he said, while opening a Cabinet of Ministers meeting on Wednesday.

Azarov said that the government had prepared a whole package of socially important bills, in particular, those concerning new incentives for the work of the IT industry. He also expressed hope that these documents would be considered and approved by parliament.

As reported, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said at a meeting of the Committee on Economic Reforms on Tuesday that "if the blocking of the parliament continues, an unscheduled sitting has to be called to make decisions" and added that the parliament should pass social and economic laws that are important to the country.

Earlier, on June 6, MPs received an annual presidential address to the Verkhovna Rada on the domestic and foreign situation in Ukraine in 2013. The opposition demanded that Yanukovych present the address in parliament.

Opposition deputies then blocked the work of parliament. The Verkhovna Rada did not work on June 6 and 7.

The press service of the Verkhovna Rada reported on June 10 that Yanukovych, at a meeting with Verkhovna Rada Speaker Volodymyr Rybak, had agreed to hold a meeting with the leaders of parliamentary factions.

The first deputy head of the Party of Regions faction in parliament, Mykhailo Chechetov, stated that the Verkhovna Rada would not call an unscheduled sitting this week.
