First Vice Premier of Ukraine Valeriy Khoroshkovsky has signed an agreement amending a grant contract between the Ukrainian government, the state-run Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The press service of the Cabinet of Ministers reported on Tuesday that the government approved the decision on November 14, 2012.

The bank will provide Ukraine with an additional grant of EUR 190 million for the completion of construction projects for the new safe containment structure over the fourth reactor at Chornobyl NPP and a storage facility for waste nuclear fuel at Chornobyl NPP. This grant will be the last contribution to raise the necessary EUR 740 million, of which EUR 550 million were raised at the International Donor Conference in Kyiv on April 19, 2011.

"The signing of this agreement is a result of joint efforts of the Ukrainian government, the EBRD and the international community aimed at transforming the containment structure into an environmentally safe system. Its implementation will also contribute to the settlement of economic and social issues related to the decommissioning of Chornobyl NPP," Khoroshkovsky said.
