Tsutskiridze: Some 57 enemy torture rooms recorded in de-occupied territories, 31 more remain in occupied part of Ukraine

The National Police of Ukraine recorded 88 detention centers for Ukrainians set up by the occupation forces: 57 of them were discovered after de-occupation, and 31 torture rooms are currently located in the occupied territories of Ukraine, First Deputy Head of the National Police of Ukraine Maksym Tsutskiridze, who is also the Head of the Main Investigation Department of the National Police, has said.

"As for torture rooms, in the cases under investigation, 88 places of detention were recorded, including 57 ones [that were revealed and recorded] after entering the de-occupied territories. As a rule, these were basements, temporary detention facilities, pre-trial detention centers," he said in an exclusive interview with the Interfax-Ukraine News Agency.

According to the official, another 31 detention facilities are now operating in the occupied territories.

"We document them and understand who exactly is involved in these crimes. Some of the occupiers have already been notified of suspicion," Tsutskiridze said.

Places of illegal detention of Ukrainians have also been established on the territory of Russia, and investigations into these cases are being conducted jointly with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), he said.

The National Police official also noted that it is difficult to say exactly how many Ukrainians suffered from torture and inhuman treatment.

"We talked about 6,800 our missing citizens. So, these are Ukrainian civilians who might be in prisons of the Russian Federation or in another territory. It is possible that the occupiers captured civilians with the aim of using them further in prisoner swaps, perhaps they covered themselves with a [live] shield when retreated," he said.
