ICC prosecutor, who comes to Ukraine to investigate, Venediktova visits Bucha

International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan and Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova visited Bucha, Kyiv region, where the exhumation of the bodies of dead civilians from the second large grave on the territory of a local church began today.

Khan and his team of investigators and experts arrived in Kyiv to begin an independent investigation of the war crimes scene, the prosecutor general said on Facebook post.

"We visited Bucha, Kyiv region, together with him, where the exhumation of the bodies of the killed civilians began today from the second large grave on the territory of the local church. As in the previous burial, most of the 15 already examined victims with gunshot and shrapnel wounds. We also visited the storage place of cars shot by the Russian military, in which people tried to escape from the war, and one of the dungeons where seven Ukrainians were tortured to death," Venediktova wrote.

She stressed that the Prosecutor General's Office is joining forces with the ICC Prosecutor's Office to investigate every war crime in Ukraine committed by Russian occupiers.

"Soon the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court will join the work of the joint investigation team that we have created with Lithuania and Poland on the Eurojust platform," the Prosecutor General added.

In turn, the ICC press service also reported that Khan had visited Bucha.

"Prosecutor Karim AA Khan QC on visit to Bucha: ‘Ukraine is a crime scene. We’re here because we have reasonable grounds to believe that crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC are being committed. We have to pierce the fog of war to get to the truth,’” the ICC said on Twitter.
