UN General Assembly urges Russia to stop full-fledged invasion of Ukraine

The UN General Assembly has supported document A/ES-11/L.2, which holds Russia responsible for the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and calls for an immediate ceasefire.

Some 140 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while 38 countries abstained, and another five countries voted against it.

Among those who voted "against" are Russia itself, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea and Syria. Among the countries that abstained from voting are Algeria, Angola, Armenia, Bolivia, Central African Republic, China, Cuba, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, South Africa, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Uzbekistan, Sudan, Tajikistan and others.

The document proposed by France and Mexico reaffirms the commitment to "the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine" and condemns Russia's military aggression on the country's territory. The draft document calls on Russia to stop hostilities, immediately withdraw its troops and return to the path of dialogue.

The General Assembly called for assistance and protection for civilians, and also criticized the aggressor country for creating a "difficult" humanitarian situation.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the adopted document contains a demand for Russia to immediately stop shelling civilians and civilian infrastructure, stop the siege of cities and ensure unhindered access for humanitarian personnel and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

"The document calls for the protection of civilians leaving the war zone, including foreign nationals, including students, and for their safe and unimpeded movement. In addition, the resolution warns of the possible consequences of Russian aggression on global food security, as well as on possible environmental consequences as a result of the shelling of nuclear facilities," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a commentary on Thursday.

The UN Member States noted the need to fully implement the UN General Assembly document "Aggression against Ukraine" dated March 2, 2022, and also set the task for the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator to prepare a report on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

The Foreign Ministry said the approved resolution was the result of the collective and thorough efforts of more than two dozen countries from all regions of the world, co-sponsored by 90 countries.
