Ukrainians with disabilities urge govt agencies to pay attention to their needs during evacuation

1 min read

Ukrainians with disabilities are calling on government agencies to pay special attention to the needs of people with disabilities during evacuation.

"The situation for people with disabilities remains difficult, as the overall coordinated evacuation efforts left them unattended," the all-Ukrainian public organization Fight for Rights, which protects the rights of people with disabilities, said in a statement.

The organization noted that many people with disabilities are experiencing significant additional risks due to limited access to the necessary material resources, information presented in accessible formats, and safe evacuation routes.

In addition, human rights activists note that warning systems and evacuation centers do not take into account the needs of people with disabilities.

"Some people with disabilities are trapped, some with disabilities are dying. We are abandoned. We are trying to help ourselves, but we need help. We need barrier-free evacuation measures that will prioritize people with disabilities," Fight for Rights head Yulia Sachuk said.
