Hrynevych explains details of Ukrainian education law at NATO headquarters

The Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Lilia Hrynevych told ambassadors of the Alliance about the peculiarities of the Ukrainian law on education at the NATO headquarters in Brussels on Monday.

"The meeting at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels has just been finished, where I told about the law on education to the ambassadors of the Alliance's member countries. The minister of education and science does not often have the opportunity to address such an audience, but since the language of our law remains a popular topic, there was a need to explain," Hrynevych wrote on her Facebook page after the meeting.

She said she told about all the details. "The main thing is that the law "On Education" is a key legislative act of the systemic educational reform on which the European future of Ukraine depends," the minister said.

Hrynevych explained that the law does not restrict any constitutional rights of Ukrainian citizens, on the contrary, it provides for broader opportunities for minority representatives to use their legal right to equal access to quality education, work and development throughout the country.

"We are a European country, so we talk with our partners, we are ready for consultations and negotiations. But every Ukrainian child must have conditions to qualitatively master the state language - this is the limit of compromise, which we won't get over," the education minister said, adding that "we were heard and supported for our openness and honesty in our own position."

As reported, the Ukrainian law on education came into force on September 28.

Among other things, the law stipulates that the state language is a language of learning at educational institutions, but one or several subjects in two or more languages, namely, the state language, English and other European Union official languages can be taught in compliance with the educational program.

People, who belong to ethnic minorities, are guaranteed the right for learning in the native language along with the Ukrainian language in separate groups of municipal pre-school and primary school institutions.

On September 28, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry sent the education law for examination by the Venice Commission.

The Venice Commission's opinion on the Ukrainian education law can be expected in December.
