ASF cases recorded in Odesa, Kharkiv regions

A pig died on October 5 in a private household in Prymorske of Odesa region.

The press service of Ukraine's State Service for Food Safety and Consumers' Rights Protection reported that in the period from October 5 through October 6 three pigs died in Rossiya cooperative (Prymorske).

The examination of the selected samples of biological material diagnosed African swine fever (ASF).

According to the preliminary information, private households in Prymorske keep around 100 pigs and Rossiya cooperative – around 2,000 pigs.

In addition, on October 6, pathological changes similar to ASF were revealed in a private household in Malynivka, Kharkiv region. The examination of the selected samples of biological material diagnosed ASF.

Measures are being taken to localize the disease on the site of the outbreak and prevent the spread of ASF pathogens.

The ASF virus is the causative agent of ASF. The virus causes a hemorrhagic fever with high mortality rates in pigs, but persistently infects its natural hosts, warthogs, bush pigs and soft ticks of the Ornithodoros genus, without any visible symptoms. There is currently no vaccine against ASF.
