Rada passes bill on local elections at first reading

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has passed the bill on local elections (No. 2831-3) which was authored by MP Vadym Denysenko (Petro Poroshenko Bloc) and Radical Party and People's Front deputies.

The bill was supported by 271 MPs on Thursday.

The bill lays sets rules and procedures for the election of members of the Supreme Council of Crimea, regional, district, city, village and town councils, and village, town and city mayors.

According to the bill, the elections of members to village councils will be held under the single-winner voting system in single-member constituencies in which the territory of the respective administrative units is divided.

The elections of members of the Supreme Council of Crimea, regional, district, city councils and district councils within a city are proposed to be held under a proportional system in multi-member voting district with open lists of candidates from political factions.
