Painful, tough reforms in Ukraine should be made swiftly – Yatseniuk

The Ukrainian government's comprehensive plan of reform should be implemented as soon as possible as Ukraine has little time, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yatseniuk has said.

"The government has developed a comprehensive plan of reform. But we've got no time. It is our obligation, [it's] a responsibility of ours and of the so-called Ukrainian political elite – to facilitate the process and make these painful and tough reforms to pave the way towards the future of Ukraine, which I see as a successful, powerful European state," Yatseniuk said at The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) foundation in Berlin on Wednesday, the Ukrainian government's press service has reported.

Yatseniuk also said that the Ukrainian government appreciates the support Ukraine has received from Germany, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and its EU and the U.S. partners.

According to Yatseniuk, Russia's actions against Ukraine were deliberate and aimed at preventing Ukraine from realizing its European aspirations.

"It was a conscious decision by Russia to prevent Ukraine from making its European choice. Then Russia invaded and committed aggression against Ukraine, having sent troops to eastern Ukraine," he said.

Yatseniuk said that as a result, Ukraine faced security, economic, social and financial problems, but was able to overcome them thanks to "the strong unity and determination of the Ukrainian nation."

"Before the Revolution [of Dignity late in 2013 – early in 2014], there was a territory, but after the Revolution we got a country. Before the Revolution, we had people, and after the Revolution we got a strong Ukrainian nation. The nation which is struggling with Russian-led aggression, which is fighting for European values, for our territorial integrity and independence, which is fighting for the security and stability in the EU," he said.
