Number of HIV infection cases in Ukraine down by almost 7% since early 2014, says health ministry

HIV infection rate fell by 6.7%, and mortality from AIDS was down by 7.9% as of November 1, 2014 year-over-year, the press service of the Health Ministry of Ukraine has reported, referring to acting health minister Vasyl Lazoryshynets.

He said that AIDS rate was the same: over 8,000 patients had AIDS diagnosis.

"Ukraine has the best trend in reducing HIV transmission from mother to a child among European countries, which today is 4.28% compared to 29% in 2004," Lazoryshynets said.

He said that the recently passed law on the approval of the general state targeted social program on fighting HIV/AIDS for 2014-2018 with the projected budget of over UAH 6 billion will allow treating over 120,000 people. In 2013, the indicator was 63,000 people and in 2012- 26,000 people.

According to the ministry, since the moment of the registration of first HIV case as of November 1, 2014 almost 262,000 HIV/AIDS cases had been registered in Ukraine.

At present over 62,000 HIV infected persons receive antiretroviral therapy, including 80% using budget funds.
