Radical groups involved in calls for overthrow of government in Ukraine – prosecutor general

Members of radical groups are involved in calls for the overthrow of government in Ukraine, Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka has said.

"An analysis of investigative materials shows that members of radical groups, who have long been operating under the guise of various public organizations, including sports organizations, are involved in various provocations and violations. They are characterized by powerful financing, cohesion and ideological work on the dissemination of nationalism and the incitement of ethnic hatred," he said in parliament on Friday.

He said that the Prosecutor General's Office had received these materials from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and that MPs could partly study them.

Pshonka said that the SBU was investigating two criminal proceedings under Article 109 of the Criminal Code (actions aimed at the forcible change or overthrow of the constitutional order or at the seizure of state power).

"There have been numerous calls for the violent seizure of state power during rallies on Independence Square. Therefore, SBU investigators opened two proceedings under Article 109 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine regarding a group of persons committing unlawful actions aimed at the seizure of state power in Ukraine," he said.
