Kyiv hopes Russia will return fisherman Fedorovych, change measure of restraint for Greenpeace activist Yakushev

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara, at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Rostov-on-Don on Monday, raised the issues of Ukrainian fisherman Oleksandr Fedorovych and the Greenpeace Arctic Sunrise cook Ruslan Yakushev.

"Our arguments on the Fedorovych issue are the following: there is every international mechanism, including international conventions and Ukraine-Russia mechanisms, to allow the return of Fedorovych and, if necessary, continue the investigatory proceedings in Ukraine," Director of the Information Policy Department at the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Yevhen Perebyinis said at a press briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.

As for Yakushev, the diplomat said that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has stated that Ukraine sees no reason for keeping him in custody, as he did not break any laws.

"We hope that in the near future they will at least change the measure of restraint under which he is kept in custody," Perebyinis said.

In turn, the Russian side took this information into account, but has not taken any steps, he said.

"The Russian minister promised to consider this information and Ukraine's appeals and give us his answer in the near future," Perebyinis said.
