Vlasenko files complaint to ECHR against annulment of his mandate

The defense counsel of former prime minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko, Serhiy Vlasenko, has submitted to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) an appeal against a court ruling to revoke his mandate of a people's deputy.

"I have just sent a complaint dated today to the ECHR. It deals with irregularities in the procedure of the early termination of my parliamentary powers," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.

The complaint says that the proceedings were held not only with the violation of his right to a fair trial, but also other human rights violations, Vlasenko said.

He also said that the defense team of the former prime minister filed a supplement to their complaint to the ECHR saying that pressure was being exerted not only on Tymoshenko, but also on her defense team.

The defense counsel expressed the hope that the ECHR will consider his complaint soon and added that a decision in Tymoshenko's complaint was expected soon.

As reported, on March 6 the Higher Administrative Court of Ukraine (HACU) stripped Vlasenko of his parliamentary powers, satisfying a lawsuit lodged by Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Rybak. The speaker said in the lawsuit that Vlasenko combined his parliamentary powers with advocacy.

After a court session on March 6, Batkivschyna faction leader Arseniy Yatseniuk said that the opposition plans to appeal against the court's decision at the European Court of Human Rights.
