Ukraine welcomes decisions of Syrian authorities aimed at refusing cooperation with Russia

Ukraine welcomes the cancellation by the Syrian authorities of the investment agreement with the Russian side on Russia's use of the seaport of Tartus.

"We believe that this step testifies to the patriotism and determination of the new Syrian government in restoring the national sovereignty of Syria as a state over the objects of the transport and economic infrastructure and returning them to the ownership of the Syrian people, as they should be," said Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Heorhiy Tykhyi.

He also recalled that this is not the only decision that the Syrian leadership has recently made.

"We also welcome the decision to ban the import of goods of Russian origin. We believe that it is quite fair and logical that the Russian Federation is gradually losing its ability to influence the future of the Syrian people, who, as you know, have suffered greatly from Russian atrocities over the past 10 years," Tykhyi stressed.

Ukraine confirms its readiness on our part to extend further a helping hand to the Syrian people, to provide humanitarian support, which these people are in great need now, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

"As you know, the first support shipments have already been delivered to Syria, and they will continue. We believe that we have every opportunity to quickly and effectively replace, in particular, the products supplied by the Russian aggressor to the Assad regime, first of all. It should be noted that this went to Assad, and not so much to the Syrians," he said.

Tykhyi also pointed out that Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha held a meeting with his Syrian counterpart in Davos, where, in particular, they discussed further scaling up the Food from Ukraine program.

"You know that the minister makes special efforts, speaks with foreign colleagues, if you list recently, perhaps several dozen conversations with foreign colleagues have concerned, in particular, the food program from Ukraine for Syrians. That is, we want to scale up the assistance that we have and, together with our partners, help the Syrian people, and this work will definitely continue," he concluded.
