Construction ministry obliges large cities to design 30-40 year urban transport patterns

Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Utilities Economy Ministry of Ukraine has obliged cities with population of over 100,000 people to design comprehensive urban transport patterns for 30 or 40 year periods, Deputy Minister Lev Partskhaladze has said.

"This will give a clear understanding of the perspective development of the transport traffic, that is, it will allow optimizing the work of all modes of transport not only now, but also in the future, organizing traffic with a minimum level of traffic jams, reducing road accidents and improving safety on the roads," Partskhaladze wrote on his Facebook page.

According to him, the integrated transport scheme (ITS) should be developed as a separate document on the basis of the city's master plan. The scheme should take into account the social, economic features and the planning of the city, the growth of population and the territory, the perspective changes in the location of large enterprises, construction, trade and other facilities.

"If cities with a smaller population have problems with traffic, they can also develop these integrated transport schemes," Partskhaladze said.

These changes are introduced in the new national construction code and will come into force on September 1.
