Internal investigation into accident at Nihyn railway station completed

Ukrainian Board Chairman Wojciech Balczun has said that an internal investigation into a collision of a shunting locomotive and a passenger train at the Nihyn railway station of Pivdenno-Zakhidna railways in Kamianets-Podilsky district of Khmelnytsky region occurred on May 27, injuring six persons, including three children, has been finished.

"We have finished the internal investigation into an accident occurred at the Nihyn station in Khmelnytsky region on May 27 when passenger train No. 139 Kyiv-Kamianets-Podilsky collided with a shunting locomotive. The conclusion of the commission is that the main reason of the accident is that the driver of the shunting locomotive ran when red lights were on and reached the route of the passenger train," Balczun wrote late on Wednesday on his Facebook page.

He said that the Ukrzaliznytsia's commission established that the station duty officer did not suspend the shunting operations on time when the passenger train was moving. There are claims to the driver and driver assistant of the passenger train who did not select the optimal speed for timely stoppage of the train before an obstacle.

"The guilty persons have been punished: 10 workers have been dismissed and 19 were subject to disciplinary action. In several days some staff decisions will be made. Under my request, the special safety arrangements have been introduced at all enterprises of Ukrzaliznytsia for the period of three months. We are increasing checks and supervision over movement safety. Workers and top managers will be involved in off-schedule training," Balczun said.
