Agricultural committee advocates opening land market in three or five years

A moratorium to sell farmland should be extended for several years for the optimal launch of the land market.

"Now we are drafting a bill where we say that the moratorium would be extended for some period – three or five years. We should include the steps to take over this period," Deputy Head of the parliamentary committee for the agricultural policy and land relations Oleksandr Bakumenko said at a meeting of the committee on Tuesday.

He said that during these years Ukraine should draft legislation for a full-featured launch of the land market in the country.

"I think that we should draw up this bill in the next two or three weeks and submit to parliament," he said.

Agricultural Policy and Food Minister Taras Kutoviy also confirmed that it is likely that the moratorium to sell land will be extended. He proposed launching a program extending rights to lease land as an alternative.
