Economy ministry draws up new bill on scrap metal

The Economic Development and Trade Ministry of Ukraine has drawn up a new bill on scrap metal to increase transparency of doing business and bringing it from the shadows and improve supplies of scrap metals to Ukrainian metal companies.

Minister Aivaras Abromavicuis said at a meeting of the council of exporters held in Kyiv on Thursday with the participation of Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk that the new bill will be published soon.

Yatseniuk said that he many times asked to make order in this segment.

"I several times raised the issue of scrap metal. The scrap metal market is corrupted. Now the ministry has changed the rules and procedures and I again ask the minister – I know that we permanently meet on the balance sheets – how much scrap metal Ukraine requires and how much scrap metal we can export. If the exports duties must be raised and this is in line with our WTO liabilities, we’re ready to this to supply scrap metals to own companies and bring the absolutely corrupted and criminal scrap metal market from the shadows," the prime minister said.

Abromavicuis said that the ministry is communicating with market players to find mutually acceptable solutions.
