Special court or tribunal should be created due to Russia's aggression - President of Latvia
President of Latvia Egils Levits said he supports the idea of creating a special court or tribunal in connection with the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
"I would also like to support the idea that it is necessary to make a special court or tribunal regarding the crime of aggression, because so far there is no such international court where such a crime could be condemned," the President of Latvia said at a joint briefing with the presidents of Ukraine and Lithuania and Estonia in Kyiv.
He also recalled the trial of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, emphasizing the need to create a similar one.
"Therefore, similarly to the international court regarding the former Yugoslavia, which worked for 20 years, one president was convicted there - Milosevic, former president of Serbia, I think that this idea should be supported. It is necessary to create such a special international tribunal regarding the Russian war against Ukraine," Levits said.
In addition, the President of Latvia emphasize that all links - from customers to the perpetrators of crimes, must be punished.
At the same time, as Levits noted, now Ukraine needs help with weapons.
"I have already said that Ukraine is fighting for us, and it is our duty to help Ukraine. By all means, all ways: with weapons, so that Ukraine can defend itself from the enemy. We in Latvia have already spent one third of our annual military budget over two months on to help Ukraine," he said.
He also called for NATO member countries to help Ukraine with effective weapons.
In addition, Levits said that Latvia is ready to help Ukraine "with the export of grain, so that the flow goes through Latvian ports."
