Poroshenko welcomes adoption by U.S. Senate of resolution recognizing 1932-1933 Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainian people
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko believes that the adoption by the U.S. Senate of a resolution recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people is the result of strengthening the Ukrainian-American partnership.
"I welcome the adoption by the U.S. Senate of a resolution recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. This is an evidence of strategic partnership between Ukraine and the United States, which has been extremely strong over the past four years," the president wrote on Facebook on Thursday.
The head of state expressed hope that other countries of the world, including the EU, and international organizations, including the United Nations, would take this decision.
"Memory of the Holodomor is a big part of the Ukrainian national memory policy, which we have been steadily introducing in recent years," the president stressed.
As reported, the U.S. Senate adopted a resolution that recognizes the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people, the Ukrainian Embassy to the United States reported.
"The U.S. Senate has unanimously adopted a bipartisan resolution, which was the first ever legal act of the U.S. Congress, where the Holodomor of 1932-1933 was recognized as genocide of the Ukrainian people," the embassy said on Facebook on Thursday.
Thus, in the operative part of the document, the Senate recognized the conclusions of the U.S. Government Commission regarding the famine in Ukraine (dated April 22, 1988) and that "Stalin and those around him committed genocide against the Ukrainians in 1932–1933."
In addition, the resolution also condemns the systematic violations of human rights, including the rights to self-determination and freedom of speech, committed by the Soviet government against the Ukrainian people, and also expresses the deepest condolences to the victims of the Holodomor and their families.
"The draft of such a resolution was also approved by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now awaiting consideration during the plenary session," the embassy said.
