Russian aggression against Ukraine targets European, transatlantic unity – Klimkin

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin has held an open debate in the UN Security Council on the issue of conflict in Europe, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has said.

"As events over the past decade have demonstrated, ignoring conflicts in Europe and failing to learn from them is no longer an option. We need to put security in Europe back into the focus of the Security Council," a message says posted on the ministry's site on Tuesday night.

Klimkin stressed that the unresolved conflicts on the European continent have one thing in common – an active participation of the Russian Federation, which uses conflict situations in their own geopolitical interests. He noted that if we do no not resist this aggression, then "every" frozen" conflict will become active, and the aggressor will continue creating new threats and challenges to stability."

The Ukrainian foreign minister also raised the issues of Russian aggression in Ukraine, the reform of the Security Council in the context of preventing the abuse of the veto power and proactive approach in the resolution of conflicts by applying certain UN Charter instruments.

Delegations from about 50 UN member states took part in the debates, as well as the Secretary General of GUAM.
