Brussels to mark Nemtsov's death anniversary with EP conference, rock concert

The anniversary of Boris Nemtsov's death will be marked on March 1 in Brussels with a European Parliament (EP) conference and a rock concert at Bozar, the city's most prestigious concert hall.

The events are being organized by the leader of the EP faction of Liberals and Democrats and Belgium's former prime minister, Guy Verhofstadt, together with the Russian politician's daughter Zhanna Nemtsova.

Nemtsov dedicated his life to the fight for democracy, freedom and (government) accountability in Russia, Verhofstadt wrote in an invitation to the events.

Prior to the EP conference, Ilya Yashin of the People's Freedom Party (PARNAS) will present a report on Ramzan Kadyrov and his role in the contemporary Russian political system.

Other speakers at the conference on strengthening Russia's European foundations will include PARNAS chairman and Russia's former prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov, Zhanna Nemtsova, and other opposition and civil society representatives. Nemtsov will be posthumously presented with an international award named after Belgian politician Jean Rey, who was famous for his continuous struggle for political tolerance and unity of European nations.

The rock concert at Bozar will open with speeches by Nemtsov's daughter Zhanna, Verhofstadt and music critic Artemy Troitsky.

An opposition politician and former deputy prime minister, Nemtsov was killed on Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge in Moscow on February 27, 2015.
