Ukrzaliznytsia hopes to resume movement on damaged bridge on Friday

Work on restoring the Kamysh-Zoria-Rozivka rail bridge crossing in Zaporizhia region where, on January 20, 2015, freight cars derailed due to an explosion, could be finished on January 23.

"This is one of the deepest problems we face today. We had four subversive and terrorist acts on railways from Monday to Thursday this week. As for this concrete case: we hope to resume movement tomorrow," acting Director General of the State Railway Administration of Ukraine (Ukrzaliznytsia) Maksym Blank said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

He said that the restoration of the bridge could depend on force majeure circumstances, and how the derailed freight cars are located at the site.

Asked whom the derailed cars belong to, he said that as far as he knows they were Ukrzaliznytsia inventory cars.

"The issue is being clarified," he said.

As reported, due to a subversive act, a two-track section of around 500 meters was damaged. A 15-meter two-track rail bridge crossing was damaged, and the supporting structure was partially destroyed.

Ukrzaliznytsia said that 25 out of 55 cars with iron ore remained undamaged and were sent to Kamysh-Zoria station, while the rest of the cars as of January 21 remained on site and cannot be restored.

Repair work will be carried out in three stages: first the damaged cars will be removed from the tracks; railway workers will then restore the tracks, and then start restoring the rail bridge crossing. Two repair trains and five bulldozers will be used for the repair work.
