Ukrainian opposition still demands govt resignation, early elections - Yatseniuk

1 min read

The demands made by the Ukrainian opposition remain unchanged: government resignation, early presidential and parliamentary elections, and the release of political prisoners, Arseniy Yatseniuk, leader of the Batkivschyna parliamentary faction, said.

"We have one clear demand to the parliament: make a decision on the government resignation, if not in the parliament, then let the Party of Regions turn to the president. The Constitution gives him the right to sign a decree on the resignation of the Cabinet of Ministers," Yatseniuk told reporters following a meeting with Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Rybak on Wednesday.

Another demand made by the opposition is the release of political prisoners. "They are Yulia Tymoshenko, three activists who have recently been convicted, and another nine activists who are not really activists, but ordinary people […] whom we tried to get out of the Shevchenkivsky Court until 0300 yesterday," Yatseniuk said.

There are two main demands now: early presidential elections and parliamentary elections. "We have given them to Parliament Speaker Rybak to give them to [President] Viktor Yanukovych," Yatseniuk said.
