Tomenko: Opposition should pay more attention to anti-corruption and socio-economic issues at upcoming parliament session

The opposition should focus on socio-economic issues and defend the powers of the Verkhovna Rada during the next session of parliament, the chairman of the parliamentary committee on freedom of speech and information, Mykola Tomenko, has said.

"During the next session the opposition will have to pay more attention to anti-corruption, social and economic issues, as well as to defending the powers of parliament in personnel matters and overseeing the spending of budget funds," he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine on Tuesday, while commenting on a meeting with voters of Cherkasy region.

Tomenko pointed to three positive aspects in the work of the opposition during the second session of parliament: in particular, the active work on the adoption of bills concerning Ukraine's European integration, the introduction of personal voting of MPs, and "a high degree of coordination in the activity of three opposition factions."

Among the shortcomings in the parliament's work, Tomenko said that "the opposition failed to strictly oversee economic issues in general and budget issues in particular."

"The public currently wants the opposition to prevent fantastic abuses of budgetary funds through tender procurement and the improper use of the funds of state and local budgets, as well as to ensure an equitable distribution of funds for regions and local councils," he said.

He noted that an example of such an unfair distribution of budget funds was a government resolution of July 3 this year, under which about UAH 9 million was allocated to Cherkasy region and UAH 132 million to Donetsk region.
