Ukraine's agriculture ministry denies introduction of direct bread wheat export limits

2 min read

The Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry of Ukraine has said that today it is not spoken about the direct restriction of exports of bread wheat from Ukraine.

"Today, we are not talking about a direct restriction of the export of bread wheat, but we will sign a traditional document with grain traders in which we point out the projected export volumes. However, taking into account the special situation on the external grain markets, this year we decided to bring together the text of the memorandum on paper [without specifying the forecast level of export] and its digital version [the supplement indicating this figure]," the press service of the Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry said.

After the report of First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Maksym Martyniuk on August 2 about the intention of the ministry to sign a memorandum with grain traders in the coming days, the media reported on a possible restriction of wheat exports from Ukraine.

As reported, the ministry keeps the forecast of wheat harvest at the level of 23 million tonnes, compared to 26.2 million tonnes in 2017. The ministry, in a pessimistic scenario, estimates the supply of bread wheat of the 2018 harvest at the level of 11 million tonnes. This is more than double demand of the domestic market for bread wheat, which is estimated at 5 million tonnes.
