Ukrainian TCG market 1% up in Ukraine in Q4 2014, says GfK

The Ukrainian technical consumer goods (TCG) market totaled UAH 15.8 billion in October-December 2014, which is 1% more year-over-year, reads a study conducted by market researcher GfK Ukraine.

The Small Domestic Appliances (SDA) and the Major Domestic Appliances (MDA) markets exhibited growth in Q4 2014, as well as the Consumer Electronics sector and the telecommunications equipment segment.

The most important factor that influenced the market was the hryvnia devaluation.

The MDA market showed a rise of 17% in Q4 2014, to UAH 3.5 billion, and in 2014 growth was 1%. Most good groups showed growth in the segment, apart from freezers and microwave ovens. Sales of refrigerators fell in the summer and grew in Q4 2014, which is unusual for the group.

The SDA market reached UAH 1.65 billion in Q4 2014, which was 15.6% up, and in 2014 the segment expanded by 16.9%. Normal growth was observed in the multicooker segment, coffee machines, vacuum cleaners, electric kettles and irons, as well as shaving and epilation equipment.

Consumer electronics sales grew by 8.2% in Q4 2014, to UAH 3.25 billion. They rose by 2.5% in 2014. TV panel sales exhibited the largest growth. Sales of audio systems grew, while sales of home theatre systems fell. The rest of the segment's groups showed a fall year-over-year.

Sales of telecommunications equipment grew by 2.6%, to UAH 3.3 billion. In 2014, growth was 6.8%. The smartphone group is the largest group of the segment. This is the only group that exhibited growth. Mobile phone and telephone sales fell by one third and fax sales halved.

The office equipment market narrowed by 12%, to UAH 244.7 million. In 2014, the decline was 20%. Sales of printers fell by over 20%, sales of scanners halved and sales of multifunctional devices fell by 5.8%.

The IT segment fell by 16.7% in Q4 2014, to UAH 3.63 billion. The market narrowed by 16.4% in a year, and media tablets showed a decline.

The photography market fell by 27%, to UAH 248.1 million and the decline in the year totaled 39.7%. Two factors affected the segment – consumers switching to more sophisticated devices and the hryvnia devaluation.

The analysts said that the downward trend will continue in 2015 along with the decline of GDP, a risk of devaluation and growth in obligatory expenses.
