Ukraine says will take 10 days to pay gas debt to Russia if price agreed

Ukraine would take ten days to pay all its natural gas debt to Russia if the two countries agreed the gas price but otherwise would bring a suit against Russia's Gazprom on Thursday over an allegedly unjustified price, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said.

"If we are able to reach an agreement on the price, we will pay off all our debts in yen days. We have already made a public worldwide announcement to that effect," Yatseniuk told German newspaper Bild.

If no such agreement is reached, Ukraine would file a suit against Gazprom on May 29, accusing it of an unjustified price rise, he said.

"The gas issue is part of the great geopolitical conflict that has been provoked by Russia. A coordinated energy policy by the European Union, the United States and Ukraine, including on the joint management and modernization of the gas transmission system, is the only correct response to the Russian gas aggression," Yatseniuk said.
