Cyprus events won't affect Ukrainian banking system, says NBU

The recent events in Cyprus will not affect the banking system of Ukraine, the director of the department for regulatory and methodological support of banking regulation and supervision at the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), Natalia Ivanenko, has said.

"The situation in Cyprus has not affected the Ukrainian people's confidence in the banking system," she said at a panel discussion in Kyiv on Friday.

According to Ivanenko, in March individuals' deposit inflow to the banking system of the country amounted to about UAH 4 billion.

"The events [in Cyprus] have not affected and will not affect [the banking system of Ukraine]," she said, without giving details.

The director of the department for statistics, analysis and prediction at the NBU, Yuriy Polonev, in turn, said that revenues from Cyprus to Ukraine in 2012 amounted to $13 billion, while those to Cyprus from Ukraine were about $7.5 billion.

As reported, Cyprus succeeded in avoiding an uncontrolled default, agreeing on financial aid from the EU and the IMF. In exchange for the aid, Cyprus will reduce its banking sector, imposing a tax on large deposits in Cyprus.
