Kyiv doesn't see anticipated effect from joining European Energy Community, says Yanukovych

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that Kyiv has not seen the anticipated effect from its accession to the European Energy Community.

"We don't see the anticipated effect from the accession to this community. There is no [effect]. We keep talking but there are no actions after these talks," Yanukovych said in the Dialogue with the Country live television program on Friday.

According to the president, when Ukraine joined the community it expected to become a part of "a big family, which has common rules and in which everyone has his place. [Ukraine hoped] to have fair relations, which will expand, and [it also hoped that] the European energy market would be fair."

Yanukovych said that this never happened. In particular, according to him, Ukraine's opinion regarding the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline was ignored, although Ukraine will lose volumes of gas pumping via its territory as soon as the South Stream is launched, as happened when the Nord Stream was commissioned.

"When the talks on the South Stream began, we warned and we asked that interests of all members of the Energy Community be taken into account. It seemed like they heard us, they agreed to. After all they agreed on the construction project without Ukraine's participation," he said.

"Ukraine's interests were violated. Then here is the question – why did we join the community? I should say that we've sharpened the issue and drawn the attention of the European Community that we as its member are dissatisfied with its attitude to Ukraine," he said.

Yanukovych also expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that Europe did not react to the fact that Russia's Gazprom billed Ukraine for not buying agreed volumes of gas in 2012 on take-or-pay terms.

"They did not react. They watched and thought it was none of their business," the president said.
