The government of Ukraine is planning to restore and modernize Odesa and Odesa region and seriously invest in this process, Ukrainian Premier Mykola Azarov has said at a press conference in Odesa on Tuesday.

The premier specified that the process of restoration and modernization will be held as part of the preparations for the EuroBasket 2015 European Basketball Championship in Odesa.

"We have an opportunity to make huge investments in the modernization of Odesa. And we will use it," Azarov said.

According to him, the airport will be modernized, its runway will be made longer, and a passenger terminal will be constructed at the airport in Odesa by 2015.

The government will also repair roads and tackle the problem with water supplies in the city.

"Water supply is an important problem in Odesa region," Azarov said.

The government is waiting for proposals from the local authorities on projects that should be implemented in the region.

"The basketball championship is just an occasion for us. We owe Odesa a debt," the premier said.

Azarov also said that he has checked the construction site of a container terminal at the Karantynny mole at Odesa Maritime Merchant Port and was satisfied with the temps of the construction.

Azarov stressed that Ukraine should focus on development of container transportations, bulk cargo transportations (coal, ore, etc.), and transhipping of liquefied natural gas (LNG) through an LNG terminal.
