Only Ukraine can decide when it is time for Russia to participate in peace talks, Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz has said.

"We will meet with the countries of the entire world at the first Peace Summit in Switzerland. We will have a dialogue on the principles of just and lasting peace there," he said during a joint press conference with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Berlin on Tuesday.

The Chancellor emphasized that so far these would not be talks on ending the war because for this Vladimir Putin would have to make it clear that he is ready to end his "military campaign and withdraw the troops."

"At the same time, it may be possible to show the way to begin a process in which Russia will one day sit at the [negotiation] table. Only Ukraine can decide when it is time for this," he said.

For as long as Russia continues the war, the partners will not weaken their support for Ukraine, Scholz said.
